Why We Love It: Not only does Heath Ceramics manufacture its own goods right in Sausalito (the same factory they’ve been using since famed ceramist Edith Head founded the company in 1948), but they run the whole business in the most admirable way. Dedicated to the craft of manufacturing and to the idea that customers should have a tangible relationship to the products they buy, Heath opens its factories to the public, is transparent about its strict environmental standards (including how it recycles own water for secondary use), offers its employees fair wages and benefits, and still believes in the idea of crafting long-lasting products you might only need to buy once in your life. On top of all that, the ceramics and tile work here remain icons of midcentury design—Heath herself was a pioneer of American pottery, and her work is part of museum collections at MoMA and LACMA, to name a few.
