Why We Love It: There a few things that set Coffee Bar apart from its trendy third-wave counterparts. For one, this place is owned and operated not by young upstarts but by the established Italian family behind Mr. Espresso, a 50-year-old Bay Area institution that started out selling coffee machines and now provides beans, machines, training, and service to many local restaurants and restaurant groups. For another, the beans (which are responsibly sourced) are roasted over an oak-wood fire. Delicious.

History: Coffee Bar opened seven years ago as a neighborhood meeting place dedicated to top-quality coffee. It is the pet project of the DiRuocco family (and is owned by Luigi, son of Mr. Espresso founder Carlo), who still work together in Oakland roasting the beans that make it into your cup here.

Favorites: Both hot and iced lattes (topped with foam art, naturally) are popular here, along with soy- and almond-milk creations that cater to those who live dairy-free. If you’re looking for food, local vendors supply Coffee Bar with breakfast burritos, Cuban sandwiches, and veggie burgers, all drawing consistent raves.

Not Just the Joe: Coffee Bar’s large space, free Wi-Fi and numerous plugs make it a fashionable hangout for the laptop-toting set, so it’s a fun, lively place to settle into for a few hours if you have to work on your novel or the business plan for your start-up. However, if you’re just stopping by on your lunch break from a real office, you’ll still be able to find a seat: On weekdays from noon until 2pm, a special set of tables is designated computer-free and has 30-minute time limits.
