Owners: San Francisco pastry chefs Anne Walker and Kris Hoogerhyde started their confectionary tradition in a rented kitchen in 2002. Every day, they’d drive their homemade baked goods to the Bi-Rite Market. Even now, they bake all the brownies, peanut brittle, cookies, and other treats blended into their flavors or used for their ice cream sandwiches.
History: When Walker and Hoogerhyde saw an empty storefront across the street from the Bi-Rite Market, they pounced on it, opening Bi-Rite Creamery in 2006. The market itself has been around since 1940.
Favorites: Bi-Rite’s Salted Caramel is its most famous flavor, but fans line up around the block for the sweet, clean Honey Lavender and quirky Balsamic Strawberry. Vegan flavors like coconut strawberry are delicious enough to satisfy even the most demanding dairy-free sweet tooth.
Extra Scoop: Bi-Rite Creamery is a Certified San Francisco Green Business and runs a sustainable shop in several ways: Its sugar cones are organic; its tasting spoons are reusable metal not disposable plastic; and the cups, spoons, napkins and containers are all compostable.
