Why We Love It: The idea for Avedano’s—a butcher shop and specialty market that focuses on local and responsibly sourced foods—came about as many good food ideas do: over dinner. When they opened in 2007, Tia Harrison, Melanie Eisemann, and Angela Wilson put a feminine face on the largely male-centric butchery business, and their well-reviewed shop continues to stay at the top of food lovers’ lists, thanks to a selection of smartly sourced items, such as grass-fed beef, wild-caught and responsibly farmed fish, seasonal local and organic produce, and handpicked gourmet pantry items. The commitment to quality ingredients and to the community aren’t the only things that are a throwback here; the market itself is located in a building that’s been home to different butchers since 1901.
