Eric Wolfinger: Beyond the Plate
If you want to tell a human story, the best place to start is at the table. Watch as photographer SF Bay Area photographer Eric Wolfinger takes us on an incredible journey far beyond the kitchen's reach to discover stories around the world while forging his own.
Few things bring people together like food – meals connect people at the table and across cultures. Beautiful dishes are prepared by the tireless work of chefs across the globe and across town. Ingredients are grown through the teamwork of many on farms. Because of these connections, food has the capacity to tell incredible stories, and photographers like Eric Wolfinger help to capture these moments through their work.
Titled, “Beyond the Plate,” this film follows the noted photographer and former Tartine baker, depicting how Wolfinger, a SmugMug ambassador, captures his unique stories behind incredible food creations. The film offers a unique lens into food photography and Wolfinger’s personal passion for traveling the world to capture the moments bringing food to life in an image.
Wolfinger’s work tells stories of a chef and their kitchen, ingredients and the places they come from, and the mindful process it takes to craft a delicious meal. By capturing every step of a dish’s creation, from the origin of an ingredient to considered final touches, he shares the soul of a dish and the chef behind it. Named “the Annie Leibovitz of food photography” by the New York Times in a recent article on his work, Wolfinger has continually been tapped by renowned chefs including Corey Lee of Benu, David Kinch of Manresa, and Gabrielle Hamilton of Prune, to depict the story their food tells.
